Location: ALS Geochemistry, Rouyn-Noranda/Val D'Or, Quebec

Reports to: Director, Eastern Canada Operations

Position Type: Full-Time

About the Position:   This position is responsible for the overall operations of the ALS Geochemistry in Quebec, including implementing the corporate direction, vision and goals. The Operations Manager is charged with achieving operational excellence while meeting budgeted financial performance and assisting with the development of market share for Quebec. The Operations Manager must ensure compliance in safety, environment, security, as well as assuring that quality, client service and best practice methods are adhered to.



Specific Responsibilities:



  • Ensures the business is run according to the Corporate Strategic and Business Plan.
  • Responsible for achieving earnings and production targets.
  • Oversees and monitors costs to ensure the business stays within budget.


  • Ensures the Quebec Geochemistry Business Unit is suitably equipped, staffed and that approved methodologies are used for the provision of a quality service to clients.
  • Ensures the optimal turnaround time for samples is achieved and maintained whilst ensuring that the highest quality of results for clients.
  • Ensures the efficient running of the laboratory including the co-ordination of resources and staff within the laboratory budget.
  • Routine monitoring of Samples processed/FTE and revenue/FTE, samples processed per lab, per shift and per equipment.
  • Ensure all maintenance and preventative maintenance programs consistently applied, logs maintained.
  • Warehouse sample storage maintained efficiently with monthly billing for stored pulp and reject from all facilities. Improvement in warehousing efficiencies.
  • Monitors ways to increase productivity and efficiency through equipment upgrading or introducing new processes and technology including progress toward semi-automation and reduction of FTE requirements for work load.
  • Advises on the recommended purchase of capital equipment and preparing purchase requests.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual operating budget for the Business Unit and works with Quebec team to meet/exceed the targets as specified in that budget.
  • Plans, organizes and directs project activities including design, procurement, scheduling, estimating, cost control, construction, start-up and commissioning.
  • Develops, establishes and manages the scope, schedule, budget and implementation plan for projects.

Safety and Environment

  • Ensures that all occupational health & safety practices and corporate compliance initiatives are being followed within the Business Unit.
  • Fosters and actively promotes work safe programs
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Ensure all regulatory agency laws are fully complied with including all regular environmental monitoring.
  • Immediately rectifies any unsafe laboratory practice.
  • Ensures adequate OHS training of staff
  • Complies with all internal systems and procedures of the Company



  • Fosters a working environment that ensures quality targets are met or exceeded.
  • Ensures that the quality of the analytical data produced is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards. Implementation and audit that all laboratories are adhering to all SOP documents, and that staff are adequately trained to adhere to these procedures.
  • Assesses the results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements as required.

Client Services:

  • Responsible for ensuring that work order entry office staff client service provided is consistent and of high quality.
  • Ensures that the business is suitably equipped and staffed, and uses approved methodologies to provide a quality service to clients.
  • Ensures the service provided meets and exceeds client expectations.

Human Resources & Corporate Compliance:

  • Works closely with the Human Resource and Corporate Compliance Department
  • Manages human resources within the business unit including: Staff Training Programs (technical, supervisory, and safety), Staff Mentoring Programs, Performance Management, Recruitment, Performance Management


  • Meets with staff on a weekly and monthly basis to review the status of laboratory and ensure goals and objectives are being met
  • Promotes teamwork
  • Actively attends to staff and supervisory training and personnel succession development in partnership with HR department.
  • Attends all Managers meeting to report on progress of the laboratory.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proven ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French
  • Proven ability to improve efficiencies and meet production schedules;
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team;
  • Understanding of Health & Safety Standards;
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal and organizational abilities;
  • Demonstrated judgment, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve;
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint and Visio;
  • Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues;


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in a management role;
  • Experience in a manufacturing or production environment considered an asset;
  • Previous experience delivering successful projects;
  • Post Secondary Education (Diploma or Degree in Business, Geology, Geo-Chemistry, or Chemical Sciences preferred);
  • Fluently Bilingual in French and English

Physical Demands:

  • This position may require a person to sit up to 8 hours per day;
  • Abiltiy to drive, frequent travel required (20% +)
  • Ability to view data on a computer screen
  • Manual dexterity for keyboarding
