Location: ALS Geochemistry, North America

Reports to: General Manager, North America

Position Type: Full-Time

About the Position: This position is responsible for oversight of the quality system and ensuring excellent technical service to clients. This includes implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of the documented quality system, resolving quality and client service issues in conjunction with Lab Managers, reviewing quality control data for trends, responding to client’s technical concerns and proactively reviewing lab processes for improvements.


Specific Responsibilities:


Technical Investigations

  • Investigates and resolves client technical concerns while proactively managing escalations;
  • Communicates with clients on investigation outcomes;
  • Assembles summary reports on multiple, serious and/or systematic errors, and on complex investigations and corrective actions for clients and/or management;
  • Determines laboratory corrective actions resulting from technical investigations;
  • Generates and evaluates comparison data for statistical trends, biases or problems;
  • Manages database of client inquiries and ensures timely responses from the Quality team on client technical concerns.

Quality Control

  • Manages program for review of quality control data for trends, biases or problems;
  • Manages the creation of custom QC reports for clients;
  • Manages program for tracking potential contamination from high samples;
  • Determines control limits and suitability of standard reference materials and allocates them to different methods;
  • Sources new standard reference materials for the lab;
  • Ensures validation procedures are completed for new and existing analytical methods;
  • Coordinates laboratory and branch quality audits;
  • Acts as a liaison between external auditors and ALS laboratories;
  • Follows up on audit action items, reviews audit results for recurring issues and ensures timely resolution of identified issues with local management;
  • Manages analysis of samples and reporting of results for proficiency test samples;
  • Reviews and manages database of results from round robins and proficiency tests;
  • Provides summary reports on performance on proficiency tests;
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager.

 Quality Documentation, Meetings, and Reviews

  • Chairs technical and quality meetings, including the yearly management review;
  • Reviews, updates, and manages distribution of quality documentation to ensure compliance with external requirements (ISO);
  • Implements quality system at new branch locations and arranges for ISO registrations;
  • Proactively reviews procedures and processes and provides input on their quality and reliability to the laboratory;
  • Reviews and compiles summary information from the technical incident database to track and resolve trends;
  • Produces weekly/monthly/quarterly/yearly quality reports to management and attends management operations meetings as required.

Human Resources

  • In conjunction with the Human Resources team be involved in employee recruiting and interviews;
  • Trains new staff and manages training records;
  • Manages time keeping for staff;
  • Prepares and delivers performance reviews, actively manages employee performance;
  • Communicates and ensures adherence to ALS Geochemistry employment and safety policies and procedures.


  • Manages day-to-day activities of the Quality Assurance team;
  • Ensures the accuracy and integrity of the record databases;
  • Inventories and purchases and organizes distribution of standard reference materials;
  • Ensures and arranges for periodic equipment calibrations;
  • Performs new staff quality orientation
  • Produces weekly/monthly/quarterly/yearly quality reports to management;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
  • Ability to stand for a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

About You:


The ideal candidate would have:

  • B.Sc. in Chemistry (or related field);
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a quality department;
  • Previous supervisory experience required;
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.

You would also be:

  • Excellent computer skills including MS Excel and MS Word;
  • Excellent command of the English language, both verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent clerical accuracy;
  • Knowledge of analytical procedures, analytical and quality systems;
  • A confident, personable, people–oriented personality;
  • Knowledge and experience with basic statistics;
  • Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues.
