Reports to: Executive Vice-President, Geochemistry & Chief Information Officer, ALS Global

About the Position:

The IT & Systems Manager is responsible for managing applications development and support; and IT service delivery for Canadian based employees. The scope encompasses application development, desktop support, data center operations, telecommunications, software/hardware components, deployments, governance and managing employees.

In this role, the incumbent is responsible for managing the IT infrastructure and desktop support in Canada including the data centers, networks, security, related hardware/software and support staff. They will work closely with the global architecture and infrastructure teams to have clarity on the global standards to be applied, which technologies, protocols and configurations all while adhering to ALS standards. This role is part of the global IT team and will be involved in developing strategies, assessing solutions and vendors, creating roadmaps and aligning on standards and priorities.

In addition, this role will act as the software product owner and be the primary interface between the business operations and software development staff (primarily GEMS – a globally distributed laboratory information system), with a key emphasis on planning, owning and communicating progress, training and working with operations to facilitate testing of each ‘solution’. This role works directly with the application owners to understand the business requirements, obtain clarity and ensure alignment on the priorities and timelines; then leads developers to deliver on the identified requirements and priorities. The manager ensures that processes and practices are in place to deliver required result efficiently and they are effectively documented. This includes using industry standard development methodology (e.g. Agile, SCRUM).

Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Work with operations to acquire and translate diverse requirements into clear specifications;

  • Provide coaching to staff and actively manage employee performance;

  • Collaborate closely with the global architecture, development and infrastructure teams while ensuring adherence to ALS standards;

  • Proactively monitor and manage the infrastructure environment;

  • Support the development and implementation of new application features, functionality and associated software tools;

  • Promote sharing of ideas, projects, and opportunities across global ALS staff;

  • Communicate clearly with key development resources and operations to ensure proper resourcing and planning;

  • Maintain project transparency to ensure that both development and stakeholders have a clear picture of the projects and each completed gap to facilitate timely user testing;

  • Liaise with business leaders in the region and globally as appropriate to GEMS, to ensure business needs are being met and rollout plans are accurate and understood by all;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Physical Demands:

  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks such as keyboarding;

  • Ability to use and view a computer screen for up to 8 hours per day;

  • Ability to communicate via telephone and email without assistance;

  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities.

About You:

 

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Five or more years of IT Management experience, managing a staff of at least 10, including software development, infrastructure and support staff.
  • Seven or more years of applications deployment, management and development experience, preferable working within an agile process, or five years in applications engineering or development of complex software products.
  • Proven understanding of infrastructure components (networking, datacenter operations, network devices and traffic routing); preferable as part of an organization with multiple locations across a number of countries.
  • Technology experiences: Microsoft Windows 10, 7, XP. Windows Server, MS-SQL Server, Oracle Database, development tools such as Visual Studio, .Net, Java, C Sharp, Python; Cisco, IT Security.

You would also be:

  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in a team environment;
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional teams within a matrix management setting;
  • Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve.
