Location: ALS Environmental, Grande Prairie

Reports to: Lab Supervisor

Position Type: Full-Time

About the Position: This position will be responsible for performing a variety of analysis by ICP, IC, Microtox and other analysis in the inorganics department. You will use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality, and adhere to safe laboratory practices by working in accordance with the ALS Health and Safety Program.

Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

 

  • Assist with all sample preparation;
  • Prepare sample dilutions, instrument operating solutions and calibration standards;
  • Instrument calibration, process trouble shooting of QC failures;
  • Operate and perform maintenance on instruments;
  • Evaluate data using instrument software and excel macro program;
  • Organise workload to meet Turn Around Times (TAT’s) as well as assist others in meeting TAT goals;
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment;
  • Follow safety requirements in Safety Manual and communicate all safety concerns or incidents to Area Safety Rep.;
  • Follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements, all deviations must be approved by Supervisor or Manager;
  • Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements and correct if required;
  • Assist in the investigations of any failed PT’s;
  • Assist with organization of LA’s and AN’s;
  • Data approval;
  • Mentorship and training resource for LA and AN-1,2
  • Assist with method development and SOP review;
  • Participate in emergency pager rotation;
  • Active participation in the COR safety program;
  • Actively participate in team meetings, bring forward ideas for process improvements, cost saving ideas, and service improvements;
  • Investigation of failed rechecks;
  • Must take part in the Corrective action plans for any failed PT’s;
  • Communicate with clients and account managers regarding sample reception and reporting.
  • Shipping and receiving samples;
  • Communicate with other labs regarding sample reception, shipping, analysis and reporting;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Perform technical decision making for non-routine, complex analyses or matrices;
  • Participate in internal audit process;

  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Physical Demands:

 

  • Able to lift 30lbs and carry for short distances;
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks.

  • Ability to stand or sit for up to a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

 

About You:

 

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Completion of diploma or degree in chemistry or related field

  • Demonstrated high level of performance in laboratory role with respect to performing all analytical processes, instrumentation monitoring and maintenance, and leadership skills

You would also be:

 

  • Must be capable of working with minimal supervision;
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Must have strong analytical and mechanical skills, be detail oriented and quality focused;
  • Must be well organised, and able to work independently as well as part of a team;
  • Assist in other sections of the lab as required;
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment;
  • Must be a careful/organized and meticulous worker;
  • Completion of the ALS University Course an asset;
  • Cross train in other areas of the lab;
  • Capable of being back up for the operational functions of the Laboratory Supervisor.
