Location: ALS Environmental, Burnaby

Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor or Team Lead

Position Type: Casual

About the Position: The Laboratory Assistant will work independently and as part of a team to accomplish a variety of lab tasks and lab maintenance. Uses correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality, and adheres to safe laboratory practices by working in accordance with the ALS Health and Safety Program.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Performs sample preparation and extraction of water, tissue and filter samples for Chlorophyll-A analysis;
  • Dispenses water samples and performs digestions for COD analysis;
  • Dispenses water samples and sample prep for Sulfide analysis;
  • Glassware cleaning and labware maintenance;
  • Enters prep data into LIMS;
  • Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc.;
  • Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation;
  • Data archiving;
  • Monitoring of any controlled equipment;
  • Sample preparation or processing;
  • Restocking of laboratory consumables/chemicals;
  • General laboratory clean-up and maintenance;

  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

  • Other duties as assigned.


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;

  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
  • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant fumes;

  • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.


About You:


The ideal candidate would have:

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required;

  • Lab technician training or knowledge of environmental sciences is an asset;
  • Some lab experience would be an asset

You would also be:

  • Proven workload management ability;
  • Able to work under the pressure of high sample volumes and to meet deadlines;
  • Familiar with webview, ALSTools and Evolims;
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Word and MS Excel;
  • Organized, detail oriented and highly motivated;
  • Able to work independently;
  • Strong team playing skills;
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal).
