    Location: ALS Metallurgy, Kamloops

    Reports to: Operations Manager

    About the Position: This position is responsible for supervising the productivity and quality of the sample preparation department including employees, equipment and related projects. The priority of this position is to ensure established procedures are followed while managing the training and development of staff on the team.

     

    Responsibilities

    Specific Responsibilities: 

    • Oversees and manages the sample preparation process as samples arrive in the lab;
    • Coordinates and prioritizes daily workloads to meet turnaround commitments;
    • Organizes employee scheduling and sharing resources with other departments;
    • Discuss and organize projects with clients and project managers;
    • Maintains close liaison with Operations Manager and other staff to ensure that Sample Preparation activities are carried out in a manner that supports productivity in other lab areas;
    • Identifies and resolves internal and external problems when they arise;
    • Carry out Sample Preparation activities with a high level of proficiency, including:
      • Receiving, storing, and disposing of samples;
      • Manage sample and time card data in the EMS;
      • Prepare sample composites as per instructions and follow job quotes;
      • Pulverizing, sieving, crushing, homogenizing and splitting samples;
      • Prepare test products for analysis by required methods;
      • Perform screen analyses, C5, and C6 cyclosizings;
    • Ships samples domestically and internationally;
    • Operates mobile equipment safely including truck, forklift, and skidsteer;
    • Adjusts, calibrates, and perform basic mechanical maintenance on equipment as required;
    • Responsible for monitoring and requesting lab supplies;
    • General cleaning and maintenance duties for the laboratory, including coordinating snow removal per the Winter Plan;
    • Responsible for training of sample preparation staff and monitoring performance;
    • Conducts monthly crew talk to discuss safety and quality issues with the staff;
    • Assists in keeping staff training records and controlled documents up-to-date;
    • Assists with employee performance evaluations, discipline and other employee relations issues as they arise;
    • Promotes a positive work environment culture that is inclusive and co-operative;

    • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

    • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Physical Demands: 

    • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
    • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;

    • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
    • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
    • Please note that ALS may require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

     

    About You:

     

    The ideal candidate would have:

    • Completion of high school diploma or equivalent required;
    • Basic knowledge of test activities in a laboratory environment;
    • Minimum 5 years of work experience in mineral sample preparation laboratory or a related field required. 

    You would also be: 

    • Demonstrates strong team orientation;
    • Excellent organizational skills and a close attention to detail;
    • Ability to effectively manage activities in a dynamic working environment;
    • Highly motivated and committed to achieving results;
    • Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and the ability to problem solve;
    • Strong quality and safety orientation;
    • Ability to effectively handle a high volume of work and time critical issues;
    • Good English communication skills (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
    • Moderate level of proficiency with MS Office products, specifically MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
