    Location: ALS Environmental, Burnaby

    Reports to: Supervisor or Team Lead

    Position Type: Casual

    About the Position: Working as part of the GCMS team in the Instrumentation Department, the laboratory analyst is responsible for all aspects of laboratory analysis including production, time management, quality control and turnaround time.

    Responsibilities

    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Prepare required standards and reagents;

    • Dispense sample extracts for the instrumentation team;
    • Screen sample extracts and prepare dilutions for the instrumentation team;
    • Perform basic GC injection port maintenance procedures;
    • Basic instrumentation use (i.e. loading and sequencing runs);
    • Perform all required quality control procedures, record-keeping & documentation;
    • Extract samples following documented specific methods and/or procedures;

    • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

    • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Physical Demands:

    • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;

    • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
    • You will be exposed to unpleasant fumes.
    • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;
    • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
    • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
    • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends

    About You:

     

    The ideal candidate would have:

    • B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry, or related discipline is required;

    • Some lab experience is preferred.

    You would also be:

    • Intermediate English communication skills required (auditory, verbal, written, and reading);
    • Intermediate user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), with confident computer skills;
    • Organized, analytical, and process oriented;
    • High attention to detail;
    • Strong problem solving skills;
    • Ability to handle pressure from high sample volumes and competing turnaround times;
    • Work independently and as part of a team;
    • Strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
    • Commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
