    Location: ALS Environmental, Burnaby

    Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor

    Position Type: Casual

    About the Position: Working as part of the team within the department, the laboratory analyst is responsible for all aspects of laboratory analysis including production, time management, quality control and turnaround time.


    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Responsibility for analysis of samples following documented methods and procedures. Depending on the department and area of responsibility, this may include:

      • FIAS, Skalar

      • Microbiology

      • Organics Extractions

    • Responsibility for data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc.);

    • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, maintenance and repair as required;

    • Carry out all required work scheduling and planning activities;

    • Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc.;

    • Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation

    • Communicate with the Client Services staff as required;

    • Deliver accurate results to our clients in a timely manner;

    • Technical decision making for non-routine, complex analyses or matrices;

    • General housekeeping functions such as area clean-up and monitoring and maintaining inventory of consumables and parts;

    • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

    • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

    • Other duties as assigned.


    Physical Demands:

    • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;

    • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;

    • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required;

    • Ability to stand for a full shift;

    • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;

    • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours. 

    About You:


    The ideal candidate would have:

    • Recognized B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry, or related discipline is required;

    • Experience working in a fast-paced, production environment an asset;

    • Experience in an analytical laboratory or related field experience an asset;

    • Experience with laboratory instrumentation an asset.

    You would also be:

    • Detail oriented;

    • Proven time/workload management skills;

    • Able to work under pressure of high sample volumes and to meet deadlines;

    • Organized, highly motivated, and able to work independently or in a team;

    • Proficient computer skills including MS Word and MS Excel;

    • Good English communication skills (written and verbal).
