    Reports to: Inorganic & Instrumentation Supervisor

    Position Type: Full Time

    Classification: AN1-AN2    Shift: Day      Hourly Rate: $18.86 - $20.27

    About the Position: The Instrument Analyst is responsible for a wide variety of analyses on GC/MS Systems. On a daily basis, this person is responsible primarily for aiding in the operation and upkeep of departmental GC/MS instrumentation, and in the assessment, coding, and reporting of analytical data. The Instrument Analyst is also responsible for filling in for primary instrument analysts as needed, and for maintaining adequate production timelines, and quality control expectations.


    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Organize workload to meet Turn Around Times (TATs);

    • Follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) requirements;

    • Data processing/review/quality, calibration standards maintenance;

    • Maintenance of quality documentation and instrument operation/maintenance;

    • Meet company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis;

    • Work with direct supervisor, and technical team, to ensure high level of data quality;

    • Ensure that assigned instruments are operated and maintained properly;

    • Prepare, document and maintain calibration standards;

    • Perform instrument calibration, trouble-shooting and maintenance;

    • Interpret data, conduct calculations, and transfer data into electronic data collection software;

    • Evaluate data and trouble-shoot problems with the data/extraction/instrumentation;

    • Follow ALS policies, procedures and adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;

    • Maintain a clean work environment;

    • Follow safety requirements and communicate all safety concerns or incidents to Safety Representative;

    • Participate in special projects;

    • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

    • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

    • Other duties as assigned by direct supervisor.


    Physical Demands:

    • Ability to lift up to 30lbs and carry for short distances; 

    • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;

    • You may be exposed to unpleasant odours;

    • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks. 

    About You:


    The ideal candidate would have:

    • Completion of technical diploma or B.Sc. degree in chemistry or related field, or equivalent education;

    • Experience with trace metals analysis, chromatography, or atomic absorption methods, would be an asset;

    • Experience with routine sample digestions for inorganic methods would be an asset.

    • Capability of working with minimal supervision;

    • Organization skill, and able to work independently as well as part of a team;

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;

    • Strong attention to detail;

    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions;

    • Intermediate experience with Excel and Microsoft Word would be an asset;
