    Location: ALS Environmental, Waterloo

    Reports to: Organics Manager

    Position Type: Casual

    Classification: LA2-LA3   Shift: Day, Afternoon

    About the Position: The Lab Assistant position will be working with client samples providing preparations, extractions and analysis of these samples for routine organic chemistry parameters.


    Specific Responsibilities:

    • Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;

    • Operate lab instrument/equipment such as pipettes, shakers, centrifuges, pH meters, balances etc;

    • Perform instrument/equipment calibration and maintenance as required;

    • Perform sample preparation such as weighing samples, sample extraction and sample

    • oncentration;

    • Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference material, etc;

    • Carry out all required data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry etc.);

    • Work in accordance with safety procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act;

    • General laboratory/glassware clean-up and maintenance;

    • Produce all tasks within specific turn around times (TAT);

    • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

    • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

    • Other duties as assigned.


    Physical Demands:

    • Able to lift up to 30 pounds and carry for short distances;

    • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;

    • May be exposed to unpleasant odours;

    • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
    • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and may require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

    About You:


    The ideal candidate would have:

    • High School Diploma or equivalent;

    • Currently pursuing a degree or diploma in Science field;

    • Laboratory experience.

    You would also be:

    • Must be capable of working with minimal supervision;
    • Must be well organised, and able to work independently as well as part of a team;
    • Ability to work in a fast paced environment;
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions.
