    Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor

    Position Type: Casual

    About the Position: The Laboratory Analyst is responsible for performing analysis in various matrices in the Inorganic section using Spectrophotometers or ICP instrumentation. This position will also perform routine functions such as sample preparation and lab maintenance.

    Responsibilities

    Specific Responsibilities:

     

    • Prepare samples, dilutions, reagents, instrument operating solutions, calibration standards, and reference materials for analysis;
    • Prepare Spectrophotometers and/or ICP Instrumentation;
    • Analyze samples of different matrices using laboratory instrumentation to generate accurate results for clients;
    • Interpret data, conduct calculations and transfer data into electronic data collection software;
    • Evaluate data and troubleshoot problems with the data/extraction/instrumentation;
    • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance, and/or repairs as required;
    • Organize workload to meet Turn Around Times (TATs);
    • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned;
    • Assist in other areas of the lab as required;
    • Meet company standards pertaining to quality and quantity of work performed on ongoing basis; perform all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all company policies and procedures. Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements;
    • Adhere to Company policies, procedures and directions regarding standard of workplace behaviour in completing job duties and assignments;

    • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;

    • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;

    • Other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    Physical Demands:

    • Able lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;

    • Able to sit or stand for a full shift;
    • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
    • Able to climb stairs;
    • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required.

    • Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
    • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
    • Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.

     

    About You:

     

    The ideal candidate would have:

    • Completion of B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry or a related discipline (required);
    • 1 years’ experience in an analytical laboratory or related field experience (asset);
    • Previous experience with Auto Analyzer or ICPOES would be considered an asset;
    • Trace Metals/Water Quality analysis experience is an asset.

    You would also be:

    • Good English communication skills (auditory, verbal, written, and reading) as required;
    • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) at an intermediate level;
    • Basic computer skills;
    • Accurate and efficient data entry skills;
    • Capability to perform repetitive tasks correctly in a fast-paced environment;
    • Good organizational skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines such as Turnaround Times (TAT) and holding requirements;
    • Analytical and process oriented skills with the ability to critically think in ambiguous situations;
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
    • A strong work ethic and willingness to take on varied tasks as required;
    • A commitment to excellence and a client-focused attitude.
