About the Position: The Organics Analyst/instrument and method specialist will be responsible for a variety of lab and analytical tasks in the Organics and Industrial Hygiene departments.
Operation of GC and GC/MS instrumentation to support a variety of chemistries; organize workloads and meet deadlines;
Routine and advanced instrument maintenance;
Trouble-shooting of instrument problems; training junior analysts on instrument maintenance procedures;
Calculation and data-entry for volatile, semi-volatile and potentially air toxics chemistries;
Data Validation (QC’ing) of GC/MS, GC/FID and GC/TCD work, where proficient;
Method review and troubleshooting;
Mass Spec interpretation;
Assists with shift scheduling and day-to day coordination of team personnel and resources to maximize production, quality and efficiency;
Provides performance feedback to supervisor in support of the performance evaluation process and brings any concerns to the attention of management;
Assists with hire candidate interviews and orientation of new staff;
Performs recheck interpretation and Corrective Action Report (CAR) investigation and completion;
Application of quality criteria to data set interpretation and trouble-shooting;
Directed method development experiments or write-ups using basic Project Management skills;
Adhere to strict QA/QC and ISO 17025 requirements;
Follow the Standard Operating procedure (SOP) requirements, deviations must be approved by Supervisor or Manager;
Ensure adherence to all procedures and policies (safety, quality, employment and technical);
Document administration (edits to existing procedures, Techsys write-ups, etc.);
Standard preparation, as needed;
Investigation of rechecks and CARs and completion of appropriate forms;
Training of (and general information resource for) team members, where proficient;
Communication with other team-members and Supervisor regarding all above functions, as needed;
Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
Other duties as assigned.
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs./14 kg on a regular basis and carry for short distances;
Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks;
Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required.
Ability to stand for up to a full shift;
Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities;
Please note that ALS operates 24/7 and will require day, afternoon, and graveyard shift work including weekends.
The ideal candidate would have:
Recognized B.Sc. or Technical Diploma in Chemistry, or related discipline is required;
Minimum 4-5 years of previous lab experience;
Proven experience with advanced lab instruments (GC and GC/MS);
Advanced Microsoft Excel knowledge (complex formulas, macros) an asset;
